HEAT EXHAUSTION VS HEATSTROKE: WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS AND HOW SHOULD YOU REACT

Summers are one of the favorite seasons for kids, as schools shut down and it’s a time for vacations. But spending time outside in hot summer may be risky. The chances of dehydration and heat exhaustion are high in summers.

What are heat exhaustion and heat stroke?

Heat exhaustion is a term that refers to a situation when the body loses an excessive amount of water and salts due to exposure to high-temperature conditions and inability to replace fluids. If this condition is left untreated for too long, it will create a bigger problem instead, that is heat stroke.

Heat stroke is a condition where body temperature elevates and the body is unable to manage the situation by cooling down our bodies.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke

Heat exhaustion-

The first indication of heat stroke is cramps in muscles following weakness, excessive sweating, fastening of the pulse, recurring vomiting, and nausea, fainting, pale skin.

Heat stroke-

Elevation of body temperature, rapid heart rate, loss of consciousness, hot and dry skin.

Causes of heat exhaustion and heat stroke

The main cause of heat exhaustion is the inability of the body to maintain the body temperature by cooling down through natural process sweating. Sweating is the process which helps in cooling down of the body. Overexertion and heavy workouts in summers or excessive high-temperature conditions are the leading cause of this ill situation. They diminish the ability to produce sweat and keep the body temperature low. Some other causes which exaggerate the conditions are- dehydration, wearing tight and dark color clothes, alcohol consumption all these situations are additional causes.

When these conditions are not manageable for a long duration, they turn out into heat stroke.

A more risky condition for-

The main risk factors heat exhaustion are children and elder people, as their bodies are not so capable to manage body temperature and pose a higher risk of these disorders in relation to heat.

Another risk factor is people who are obese. More weight leads to more heat production. Therefore, people who are fat are more at risk of heat strokes.

Change in weather conditions is also a high-risk factor. People moving from a cold weather to a place with hot weather are at risk of catching many ill effects due to the extreme change in conditions and body’s inability to adjust accordingly.

Certain medications can also have a bad impact on your body to manage the fluid balance. This includes- medicines for high blood pressure management and for heart-related disorders.

Treatment

To treat these conditions try shifting to a cooler area, remove dark color and tight clothing’s, add more water in your diet plan, in case of hot climate – take cold water showers to decrease the body temperature. Moreover, in emergency situations consult your doctor and take proper medications.

Preventions

To prevent heat exhaustion and therefore heat stroke-

  1. Avoid the alcohol consumption to prevent dehydration
  2. Try to drink more water to prevent the ill effects of excessive hot conditions.
  3. Avoid extra workload leading to overexertion in hot summers.
  4. Take cold water showers to decrease body temperature.
  5. Small breaks in-between the heavy working hours prove helpful to avoid exertion.
  6. Take proper rest and avoid excessive exposure to heat.

These heat-related illness are common in summers, therefore it’s crucial to prevent the chances of their occurrence by taking preventive steps. Drinking water is the most appropriate and essential component to avoid any health condition.
